New Braunfels, Texas is located between San Antonio and Austin.  It is an old German town where the Wurstfest (Wurstfest Association) is celebrated each fall. The Guadalupe River runs through the city.  It is also the home of the Schlitterbahn Water Park (www.schlitterbahn.com/nb/).

I was there last week and saw how low the water was. That did not stop us from having a good time while tubing on the Guadalupe River.  We went to the Rockin “R” outfitter (www.Rockinr.com).  They for a fee supplied us with tubes and transportation to and from our condominium at Water Wheel on Mather Street. It was worth the price and making the trip!

Make sure you get a tube that has a plastic bottom when the water is so low.  This keeps you from bumping rocks on the bottom.

Texas is experiencing probably the worst drought in over 100 years.  Crop and livestock damage has been estimated to be in the billions of dollars.  Cows are being sold at auction for lower than normal prices.  Most fields are not producing crops or grass.  Ponds are going dry.

The Lake Travis LCRA (www.LCRA.org) shut down the last boat that ramp last week as well.   There is still a lot of water in the lake.  Boaters should be cautious because islands are popping up where some people do not expect them.  If you have good river map you should have no problem. The Colorado River basin will eventually get enough rain to fill the lake back up.  It is going to take a lot of rain.

Lake Conroe is run by the SJRA (www.SJRA.net) and is doing fine.  It is only down about 16 inches.  Boaters should be cautious but for the most part boating is good for now.

The best advice in the heat of a Texas summer is to drink plenty of water, use sunscreen with a high SPF, wear appropriate clothing, a hat and sunglasses.
