Montgomery County Judge Alan B. Sadler calls for ‘water summit’ meeting of State and Local Officials

The by invitation meeting included State Sen. Robert Nichols; State Sen. Tommy Williams; State Rep. Brandon Creighton; and State Rep. Rob Eissler; Conroe Mayor Webb Melder; Nelda Luce Blair and representatives from the San Jacinto River Authority, SJRA and the Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District, LSGCD. The meeting will be held at the 3 PM 2009/9/28 in the new Sadler Commissioners Court Building in downtown Conroe.

In the next five plus years Montgomery County must drop its ground water use by 30%. Ground water is the potable water we pump from the ground not surface water from a lake. The SJRA wants to build a treatment facility for surface water from Lake Conroe. The treated water would then be pumped to Conroe and The Woodlands. Houston also owns the top 1/3 of the lake and at some point especially during a drought using surface water from Lake Conroe could effect recreation on the lake. The initial treatment project is to cost about $480 million.

Judge Sadler wants to see water piped from other east Texas rivers to ease the pressure from using Lake Conroe water. Currently there are no provisions made by the state to cover that.

Lets keep our fingers crossed that Lake Conroe can remain a great recreation area that helps support our local economy.
