Yes!

You will probably notice that the stuff coming out of your gutters is the color of your roof shingles. If so, most likely you have had some damage caused by hail or the roof is simply wearing out.

With a newer home damage like this may not always be obvious. The shingles are new and a bad hail storm may damage your roof, but not to the point where you can see it from the ground.

That is when it is time to check your gutters. In the bottom of the gutters you may find sand or gravel looking material that is the color of your roof shingles.  If so, call a roofing contractor right away for an inspection. That way if their inspection shows roof damage you may be able to make a claim for a storm damaged roof.

Roof repairs or replacement can be seriously expensive.

Spring time and early summer can bring thunderstorms up quickly and often they have hail.

Here are a few things to check for around your home after a hail storm.

Check for collateral damage.

Collateral damage is something other than your roof/shingles such as your gutters, gutter screens, windows, window screens, wood fence, garage door, air conditioning unit, soft metal flashing, siding and trim. Examine the ground level collateral damage. Start with your wood fence – the hail marks will be easy to find they are the marks/spots that look like someone beat the hail out of your fence with a hammer. Now look at your windows and window screens. Look for tears in the screen and dent on the aluminum frame. You might even find cracked or broken window panes.

The Roof

Grab your ladder and climb on your roof. Inspect the soft metals such as vents, plumbing pipe flashing, stacks and roof jacks for dents. Hail will dent these components before it will damage most shingles plus it will give you an idea of the size of the hail that hit your home.

The Shingles

If you’re not trained to inspect roofs, it may be difficult for you to identify hail damage. You should look for circular dents/impacts in your shingles or areas with dents/impacts where granules are missing. You’re looking for an impact on the shingle not normal wear and tear on your roof.
